Abstract:

Purpose: When some Information is missed or unintentional mistakes are happened in a published paper, the authors or the editors would write an erratum to correct and make the Information reliable. The current research investigates corrections to the papers published in Library & in Information Science (LIS) Journals during 2006-2015. Methodology: The current study was an applied research conducted through a descriptive and correlational survey method using scientometric indicators. The sample of the study comprised of 212 erratums published in 47 Web of Science-indexed LIS Journals. Results: Findings of the study revealed that during the time span of this research, 4. 51 corrections were published in LIS Journals on average. Studied Journals were found to have the correction rate of %0. 69. The mean time from publication of the article to the corresponding erratum was 8. 7 months. The results also showed that the highest share of errors in LIS Journals were occurred in authors’ Information (%27. 03), followed by references (%14. 16), tables (%12. 45), figures (%6. 87) and introduction (%6. 44), respectively. Moreover, the results of running a series of Spearman’ s Rank Correlation tests revealed no statistically significant relationship between the Journals’ impact factors and their correction rates. Conclusion: Correcting the unintentional mistakes in scholarly articles is an ethical responsibility of researchers. Academic Journals should be careful to the process of peer-review and establish clear correction policies.

Abstract:

Presently, Journals are considered as the most important tools of Information Science and knowledge growth throughout the world. Due to the increase in the number of scientific Journals, the selection, evaluation and determination of the authenticity of these resources by the authorized organizations has attached more significance to them. Thus, the present study aims at investigating the compliance of Iranian Library and Information Science Journals with basic standards of journal evaluation through Thomson Reuters’ viewpoint. This is an applied research, which has been conducted through comparative analysis. It evaluates the authenticity of scientific Journals through four basic standards of Thomson Reuters, namely on-time publishing of Journals, observing international publishing laws, fulltext in English, and peer review. The population of the research includes all the active scientific Iranian Journals in the field of Library and Information Sciences (12 Journals). Results showed that the mean of correlation ratio between the studied Journals and standards was 75%. On-time publishing and full-text in English were observed only in 33% and 58% of the studied Journals respectively. However, observing international laws of publishing and peer review are in optimal status. Studies are needed in order to find out the compliance of the other countries’ Library Science Journals with international standards, (specially developing ones) to help those countries to identify the existing gaps which will assist them to present their researches in the international level through being indexed in authentic databases. Obviously more research is needed in this area, as Thomson Reuters has published standards other than the basic standards.

Abstract:

Purpose: The current research aims to investigate the relationship between altmetric activity and quality of the LIS Journals indexed by Scopus in 2015.Methodology: In this descriptive and relational research, altmetric and bibliometric indicators were utilized to study Journals’ performance. The population of the study was comprised of 134 LIS Journals in Scopus. Altmetric Explorer, Scopus, Scimago Journal and Country Ranking (SJR) and Journal Metrics were used for data gathering. Moreover, data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential tests in Microsoft Excel and SPSS.Findings: Results of the study revealed that of the 6638 papers with unique DOIs published in LIS Journals in 2015, 2524 articles were mentioned at least once in social media platforms (altmetric coverage of 38%). The highest altmetric presence was seen in “Journal of Information Science” with altmetric coverage of 100%. Moreover, “D-Lib Magazine” was received the most altmetric attention with the mean altmetric score of 17.9. The results of running a series of Spearman’s rank correlation tests revealed positive and statistically significant association between two indicators of altmetric activity (altmetric coverage and mean altmetric score) and four indicators of quality (SJR, SNIP, CiteScore and mean citations received). Conclusion: Results of the current research showed that papers published in higher quality Journals, are more likely to be shared in social media tools and get more altmetric attention.

Abstract:

Background and aim: Journal Citation Report (JCR) is the oldest and most important database of Journal's assessment. The aim of this study was to determine the IF ranked in JCR database compare to the SJR ranked in SCImago database during a three-year period from 2012 to 2014.Material and methods: This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on 38 Library and Information Science Journals using scientometric method and the data were collected from Thomson Reuters and Scopus databases.Findings: According to the findings, there was a positive correlation between the values of IF and SJR in Library and Information Science Journals indexed in Scopus and Thompson Reuters databases. In addition, there was a positive relationship between the ranking of these Journals indexed in JCR and Scopus (P<0.05).Conclusion: The result showed that it is necessary to use both of these ranking systems such as Scimago and SJR by the researchers of the field of Library and Information Science.

Abstract:

To develop a product there are two main approaches: Direct Engineering, or Reverse Engineering. In direct engineering, the aim is to manufacture a product that is felt needed, for which there are no prior design plan. All production processes must be started from scratch. In reverse engineering, however, the aim is to manufacture a new product using a product that has already been manufactured. The initial product is used as a template to save on investment and time. Since it eliminates many difficult, costly and time consuming production processes, reverse engineering has come to be acknowledged as an appropriate method for product manufacturing. Based on the teachings of allegorical thinking, using tried methods within a field of Science to solve problems in other fields, is a common and reasonable approach leading to economy and increased productivity. In Library and Information Science we are confronted with large body of issues that could be possibly solved in a novel and appropriate manner with the help of well-tried approaches such as reverse engineering. The present paper while introducing and outlining reverse engineering, would indicate some of the examples and applications in Library and Information Science activities. Application of reverse engineering in Information organization, reference services, computer software, databases and Information seeking behavior.

Abstract:

Purpose: This study has been performed for content analysis of papers related to promotion of reading and children’s libraries which were published in specialized Journals of Library and Information Science (LIS) during 1999-2008.Methodology: Content analysis was employed. The population under study included all LIS specialized Journals which were seven.Findings: Investigation of total number of papers published in LIS specialized Journals indicated that, among these 1429 papers, 52 of them (6.3%) related to development of reading and 27 of them (8.1%) have studied children’s libraries; among these 79 papers, 75 of them (9.94%) were original papers while 4 of them (1.5%) were translation. Also, among the papers related to book reading and children’s libraries which were published in LIS specialized Journals, 37 ones (8.46%) were research papers, 21 ones (6.26%) were analytic papers, 2 of them (5.2%) were review papers, and 19 ones (1.24%) were compilation.Originality/Value: Paying attention to book reading and children’s libraries is among significant issues in LIS. Absence of research studies in such fields reveals little attention assigned to them. This justifies the present study.

Abstract:

Purpose: This article argues that local concepts in Library and Information Science are in line with human nature and needs rather than being a product of western or eastern viewpoints. Design/Methodology/Approach: Relevant literature has been reviewed and analyses have been carried out. Findings: Many concepts are rooted in the culture of Islam, the Quran, and the Hadith. Researchers can use these concepts in their research, especially in theoretical foundations. Conclusion: No analysis similar to this has been carried out before. There will hopefully be stronger foundations in this field for localizing research. This research introduces some basic concepts in the field of Library and Information Science that are rooted in Islamic thoughts in Iran; hopefully similar research will be carried out for other fields in humanities.
